OUR PHILOSOPHY

Our philosophy begins with love and respect for every child.

Our teachers form secure emotional bonds with each student, paving the path to a comfortable and natural environment for discovery and learning. We provide a high-quality early childhood education while simultaneously incorporating the values of our heritage. We value the blossoming of character in each student as much as we cheer on the development of academic skills.

We believe in…

Embracing Individuality

Each child is a unique and precious gift entrusted into our care. We believe in creating an environment where the children can grow and mature and contribute their own ideas to the learning process.

Chanoch Lana’ar Al Pi Darko

We believe in educating each child in his or her own way, fostering love and respect, thus enabling them to develop the capability to love and respect others.

Active Exploration

Recognizing children as natural explorers, we cultivate their curiosity through play and a rich environment filled with diverse learning opportunities.

CURRICULUM OVERVIEW

Our Pathway To Growth

In our comprehensive curriculum, we prioritize fostering holistic development across all age groups, creating nurturing environments where children thrive and flourish. Here's an overview of our tailored approach.

  • In our Infant/Toddler class, we prioritize building warm, trusting relationships, ensuring each child feels respected and valued. Emphasizing active participation over passive reception, we foster language, cognitive, physical, and social/emotional development within daily care-giving activities. Our environment encourages safe, hands-on exploration, promoting curiosity and mastery.

  • Guiding children from solitary to cooperative play, our teachers support their growing independence and responsibility. Through multi-sensory activities, storytelling, songs, and play, we nurture cognitive, social, and emotional development. Simple prayers and Jewish traditions are woven into daily routines, fostering a love for Jewish study and values.

  • In the preschool class, we blend Judaic and secular subjects into a rich, fulfilling, stimulating and progressive program. Play continues to be a vehicle of growth for the preschool-aged child. Structured and unstructured play time affords a child the opportunity to share, think and problem solve. In addition, the children engage in the following subjects:

    Reading and Language Arts

The children are introduced to many types of literature through picture books, stories, tapes, fingerplays, dramatic play, and role taking. Pre-reading visual and auditory skills are stressed. Children who are reading are given ample opportunity to continue their reading and writing progress.

    Math

The mathematics curriculum provides an introduction to numbers and mathematical concepts including numerical representation, ordering, relative sizes, equivalence, and geometric shapes.

Recognizing and writing numerals as well as simple addition and subtraction concepts are introduced when developmentally appropriate using hands-on manipulatives.

    Social Studies

For young children, learning to participate in a group is an important developmental accomplishment. The program provides activities that encourage cooperative learning and group social skills. Units of study focus on the family, the home, friends, and the community.

    Judaic Studies

Simple prayers, blessings, and Jewish songs are part of daily routines in the classroom. The children are exposed to stories, customs, and songs surrounding the holidays and Torah readings following the yearly cycle. We present Judaism in a positive way so that each child can grow in his/her attachment and love of Jewish study and internalize the values of the teachings of the Torah.

    Science

The science curriculum emphasizes direct experience with the physical world. Units of study include animal and plant life, the physical universe, weighing and measuring, household tools, and the seasons.

    Art

Our children have a wide range of art activities available. They learn to work with a variety of media and to express themselves creatively, to sharpen their sensory perceptions and to make decisions.

    Music

Music activities are part of our daily program. The children learn concepts in all curricular areas through songs and movement. They experience the joy of making music together, dancing, listening, and creating their own songs.

    Physical Development

The children play outdoors almost every day. Large muscle skills are developed through running, jumping, balancing, climbing, digging, and cycling. The small motor skills and hand-eye coordination essential to reading and writing are developed through the use of the manipulative materials in the classroom.

  • For those preparing for kindergarten, our optional afternoon program focuses on academic enrichment and readiness, ensuring a smooth transition to the next educational milestone.

OUR STORY

Since 1985, Gan Israel Preschool has been a continuous source of education and connection.

Graduates of our programs have maintained life-long connections, with some joining our Hebrew School, Summer Camp, Jewish Life-Cycle Celebrations and preschool staff. We feel fortunate that some have even returned to enroll their own children at Gan Israel. Under the direction of Morah Chanie Baron and the guidance of the wonderful staff that have joined the Gan Israel Family, children learn both their alphabet and their aleph-bet simultaneously. Our child-centered environment provides opportunities for self-directed exploration as the children experience and absorb the joy, values and traditions of our Jewish heritage.

OUR CAMPUS

Gan Israel Preschool shares the almost five acres of open fields and orchards that is home to the Lubavitch Center for Jewish Education.

Gan Israel Preschool shares the almost five acres of open fields and orchards that is home to the Lubavitch Center for Jewish Education. The children’s play area includes a fully-equipped, fenced playground with plenty of open space for games and athletic activities.

The grounds also include an amphitheater, a fitness area, a fish pond, fruit trees, a vegetable garden and farm animals, all of which are integrated into our program of science learning and exploration. Holidays and special events are often celebrated with fairs, bounce houses and picnics making use of the spacious, natural setting. The entire campus is surrounded by a security fence and a controlled-access gate.

Our bright and spacious classrooms have high ceilings with many windows that allow for natural light and provide the staff and children with a magnificent view of all that nature has to offer. Through the seasons the children observe the fruit orchard, deer, rabbits, and birds of so many colors. Our classroom design is inspired by the Reggio Emilia philosophy. Each of our classrooms have high-quality vinyl wood flooring, wooden tables, chairs, furniture and play centers and are intended to make the children feel at home.

Gan Israel is licensed by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) Division of Early Childhood Development.
